Why we went…
Good beer, the Christmas market, the movie In Bruges, and it was a new country for the kids!
How we got there…
We took the train from Amsterdam through Brussels. It was easy to navigate and fun for the kids to have a European train experience and see some of the country side.
Where we stayed…
We stayed in a very inexpensive VRBO in Bruges located just behind the main square. This was the perfect location to explore the city and enjoy the Christmas market.
What we did…
The best thing to do in Bruges is walk around the city and explore! There is beauty around every corner. When I was in my 20s I visited Bruges and took a canal boat tour, but since we just did that in Amsterdam and it was raining and cold, we opted for walking this time. Waterproof shoes and clear domed umbrellas for the kids kept everyone comfortable in the rain and cold.

If traveling to Bruges between Thanksgiving and New Years, you will be delighted with beautiful lights, decorations and one of the most charming Christmas markets.

Visiting one (or more) of the many chocolate shops in the city is a must.

Where we ate…
De Halve Maan Brouwerij – Belgian moules frites and really good beer!

De Garre – This charming brewery is right in the heart of town near the main square. It is tucked away down a little ally. The beer was fantastic! Spencer loved the money wall, and both kids loved sliding down the tiny spiral staircase.

Le Trappiste – Loved this charming beer bar located in an 800 year old medieval cellar. The brick vaulted ceilings and candles added to the ambiance. The beer was fantastic, and the kids loved the foosball table!

‘T Walpoortje – We had Thanksgiving dinner here. Moules frites, Flemish stew and other local favorites.
